Does spatial sorting explain leading edge personality types in a spider’s non‐native range?

چکیده

Expanding populations are often characterized by phenotypic shifts across the range. Processes like spatial sorting predict that phenotypes may be distributed along a range based on dispersal ability, where most dispersive individuals found at leading edges and least remain population core. Thus, traits correlated to also become spatially in same pattern. Cyrtophora citricola is an orb-web spider with two expanding originating from core its non-native Florida Since spiders were previously differ various personality those core, we measured latency likelihood laboratory-raised spiderlings determine whether can account for these patterns. Only one of showed evidence sorting, suggesting this phenomenon likely context dependent not always generalizable populations. Spiders edge eastern more than although western three Dispersal was activity exploratory tendencies individuals. Population-level differences had observed foraging aggression captive-raised spiders, they represent plastic responses environmental conditions instead being result dispersal-correlated trait evolution. However, mean population-level exploration boldness maintained captivity, behaviors have heritable component. Overall, as bolder, whereas bold exploratory. While study provides dispersive, exploratory, active population, divergence risk-taking between highlights potential dependency importance understanding interactions natural selection.

Does Residential Sorting Explain Geographic Polarization?

Political preferences in the US are highly correlated with population density, at national, state, and metropolitan-area scales. Using new data from voter registration records, we assess the extent to which this pattern can be explained by geographic mobility. We find that the revealed preferences of voters who move from one residence to another correlate with partisan affiliation, though voter...

Does a cell protein explain Covid-19 severity

Does a protein on the surface of some of our cells explain why certain people are more at risk from covid-19? The coronavirus attaches to a receptor protein on the surface(ACE) of our cells to gain entry to them. The protein is carried by cells in the nose, lungs and gut. It is possible that variation in how much of this protein people have may help explain why some are more likely to die from ...

Long-range interactions within a nonnative protein.

Protein folding and unfolding are coupled to a range of biological phenomena, from the regulation of cellular activity to the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. Defining the nature of the conformations sampled in nonnative proteins is crucial for understanding the origins of such phenomena. We have used a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and site-directed mutagenes...

Contact guidance requires spatial control of leading-edge protrusion

In vivo, geometric cues from the extracellular matrix (ECM) are critical for the regulation of cell shape, adhesion, and migration. During contact guidance, the fibrillar architecture of the ECM promotes an elongated cell shape and migration along the fibrils. The subcellular mechanisms by which cells sense ECM geometry and translate it into changes in shape and migration direction are not unde...
